Masthead design

The masthead design is very important as it helps define the magazine style.
I researched music instruments popular bands and music magazines masthead fonts,
On examining them, I was unable to see any link and therefore felt free to choose anything.
However when searching POP  fonts and ROCK fonts there was a big contrast:
POP

ROCK
Pop font seemed more girlie because of the hearts. It was also rounder and has curly edges.
Rock font looks similar to gothic font, has sharper edges and it is bolder.
For my masthead I will try to mix both of the styles to represents both genres.
Here are a few examples:

This font has a jeans pattern
which relates to fashion which is seen as
a girl thing. It has round and straight
lines balancing both genres.

This font is gothic style but with round
and curly edges as for pop.

This is a  simple font very round but
with sharp edges.

This is a bold font and curly as well as italic.

To decide which font would be most liked by my target audience I asked for their opinion of which they preferred. To show their opinion I recorded a focus
group with people of the age of my target costumers.

Now I have to decide between option 1 and 2 as enthusiasm for these were equally split. I find 1 more suitable for my music magazine because font number 2 is very gothic putting my whole magazine into a darker mood.

Subtitle

Music magazines have the name of the singer who is in the cover shot in big font as a subtitle, with a inscription of the artist (selling the artist) with quotation, latest news or their success achievements.
here are some examples:

My target audience said on the questionnaire that if the chosen artist was a band they would have preferred
to show the whole band instead of only the main member, the singer of the band. I will include the whole band in the shot when doing the double
page spread but for the front cover I chose to show
 an  artist called Nina Becker.
I will put a quotation on the front cover about her come back as she was very famous before leaving to focus on her study.
To hep me to do this, I decided to look at artist who were famous but had a break and then came back with a great deal of fame. An example is Adele who was very famous until 2012 Grammies award where she announced she would have a break to focus on her relationship.
Now 2015 she is back with her new single Hello with full speed ahead:

Many female singer have breaks to spend time with
their loved ones. They want their children to receive the usual mother's
attention and a normal life without paparazzi.

When Adele came back magazines introduced her revealing what happened to her life off the cameras and social media.
Her life is no longer private.

Magazine of singer Adele coming back analysis:
The coloured triangles is catching all colour compositions at the edge of each triangle. I have done a triangle with her face makeup shadows. The brown triangle links all brown areas, her hair and eyebrow. The black triangle links the black eye makeup, black shirt and dark hairs. Lastly the white triangle connects to the white background, eye ball and robe. This shows that the main focus is in the centre above her cheek bone under her eye area.
She looks like she came out of the shower. This can refer to privacy, from revealing her private life or suggests how a shower is what you do at the end of the day for a new fresh new start in the morning, fresh link to young, new. This has been done to disguise her age and to show she is still able to be in the music industry, people from the new generation would still like her. They also show this by her lipstick which is a delicate pink which gives the idea of young being and girlie. Her tattoo being showed suggests her past is a memory market and she is now a new person.
The phrase "A private Life" makes people feel valuable as they are
revealing secrets. People will be curious about what happened in the last years while she was away.

From this research I now know when doing the cover shoot I will include reference to exciting personal news of what happened and what changed. Makeup or props make the person look young if not already. This will make them stand out more in the first year after their brake.

The cover subtitle would present her name in big font and the font would be chosen by being most associated with the singer.

Nina Becker had a break from her musician carrier because she wanted to focus on her education finishing her PHD.
So the subtitles description would have to show the opposite so she could give the impression of coming back better than before. To do so the description could be the contrast of serious(study). I should avoid it to be "The key to her achievements"or "Key to success".

The phrase  could be:

- " Blows fans away"

-"with a rebel yell"

- "Has risen from perceptions"

-"Far from ordinary"

-" The track that changed my life"

-"living on the edge"

-"The wild life of....

-"The bare truth of ....

-"Inside the secret life of....

-"The girl beneath Nina"

From these ideas the most rejuvenating and eye catching description is “Inside the secret life of...

This is because it will emphasise on the contrast of being the student, a scholar person from the pop rock star famous life.

Subtitle design

To find the ideal font for Nina Becker I have tested a few time to see which suits better:

After trying many fonts I thought that those hand written fonts looks better. This type of font would personalise the magazine and fans would be able to keep the signature as an autograph.
Here are proceeding tests of hand written fonts:
1

2

3

4

I have chosen number 2, it would contrast with the masthead font, as it is very bold and number two has thin lines , which stops from 4 being chosen. I don't want the subtitle to get more attention than the masthead so I will discard number 1 as it is in capitals. Number 3 does not associate with the singer's background as it looks like a very posh signature. Number 2 is edgy scandalous and original.
